What a recovery difference is worth
Yield is a physical measure, and plants act on it through commercial decisions. Priority for an engineer’s time or a capital request depends on what a recovery difference is worth, and that depends on more than the kilograms.
This layer connects the material balance to product value, raw-material cost and the true price of each exit route. Mass that could have been finished product but left as low-value byproduct is valued at the difference between the two, which is usually smaller than the headline product price. Rejection is costed according to what actually happened to the material: scrapped, downgraded, repacked or reprocessed.
An assessment is stated as a range with its assumptions visible, and it is explicit about the point that matters most: a gap only becomes an opportunity once someone has established that it can be closed.
| If recovery reached | Yield | Additional output | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| To the bottom of the expected range | 65.1% | 144 kg | $186 |
| To the centre of the expected range | 66.2% | 408 kg | $526 |
- Product value
- $1.35/kg
- Same mass as pomace
- $0.06/kg
- Net value applied
- $1.29/kg
Assumes recovered mass would otherwise have left as pomace. Whether either gap can be closed has not been established at this point.
